Saturated fat

Excessive consumption of saturated fat is associated with higher cholesterol levels and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Saturated fats are mainly found in biscuits, crisps and ready-made products, red meat, and full-fat dairy. The perception of saturated fat has become more nuanced in recent years. Recent insights emphasize that moderate consumption is acceptable; saturated fats play a role in physiological processes in the liver, intestines, and brain. A balanced fat intake, with limited amounts of saturated fat and a focus on omega-3 fatty acids, is important for overall health. Prefer olive oil, flaxseed oil, chia seed oil, or fats from fish, and avoid oils high in omega-6, such as sunflower oil.

Saturated fat and your health

There are a number of health effects associated with consuming saturated fat.

Saturated fat increases the risk of stroke

A high intake of saturated fat can contribute to elevated cholesterol levels and atherosclerosis. These are risk factors for stroke.

A balanced fat intake, emphasizing unsaturated fats, supports better vascular health. Preferably choose olive oil or omega-3-rich oils (such as rapeseed oil) instead of omega-6-rich oils like sunflower oil. However, moderate intake of saturated fats can fit within a healthy diet.

Saturated fat increases the risk of cardiovascular disease

Excessive consumption of saturated fat can contribute to elevated cholesterol and atherosclerosis. These are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. However, moderate intake of saturated fats can fit within a healthy diet.

Replacing (excessive amounts of) saturated fats with unsaturated omega-3 fats helps maintain a healthy heart. Avoid fats with an unfavorable omega-6/omega-3 ratio, such as sunflower oil, and opt for extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, chia seed oil, and fatty fish.
